An orthodontic emergency is important and should be handled right away. Orthodontic emergencies can encompass many things. A loose bracket, a broken bracket or rubber band, or anything lodged in the brace or tooth may qualify as an orthodontic emergency. At the offices of Sheldon Jay Rintel, DDS, our Forest Hills emergency care center provides immediate care for patients who are suffering from an orthodontic emergency.
Sometimes irritation can happen from braces that may warrant a trip to our Forest Hills emergency care center. The mouth, cheek, tongue or lips may all get irritated and need relief. Sometimes adjustments to braces can help. If food gets stuck behind your braces, patients can try to use dental floss to get it out. If not, call our offices so that we can remove it for you. Be sure not to damage the braces or gums. If a ligature, or rubber band, comes off, come in for a visit so that we can adjust them and make sure that they stay on. Or for brackets that have come loose, we may suggest a visit to our offices.
Brackets are an important part of braces. They serve to hold the braces in place with the use of wires and are bonded with adhesive directly to the teeth. Brackets are stable and sturdy. Eating hard and crunchy foods can cause the brackets to loosen. Sometimes direct trauma to the teeth can cause them to loosen as well. A mouth guard can be used to prevent this from happening. If brackets have come loose, call our Forest Hills emergency care center to find out more about how we can help fix your loose brackets or wires. Wires can also come loose but many patients find that they can actually push the wire back in to prevent it from poking them in the mouth.
